July 4: Gettysburg Living History Portrayals performed by The Confederation of Union Generals

Gettysburg Living History Portrayals performed by The Confederation of Union Generals will air this year on PCN! The Confederation of Union Generals is a non-profit Civil War Living History educational organization based in Gettysburg, PA.

The First Day:  Wednesday July 1, 1863

  • The first encounter between Union Calvary Forces and Confederate Forces West of Town, from the prospective of the Union Commander, Brig. General John Buford. (M. Leonard)
  • The arrival of the Union I Corps on the developing battlefield West Of Town , and initial deployment, of it’s vanguard unit, the Iron Brigade commanded by Brig. Gen Lysander Cutler. (W. Tice)
  • Engaging the enemy, west of Town 2ND Wisconsin, Iron Brigade, and Col. Lucius Fairchild. (S. Thompson), the action from and enlisted man’s point of View, Sgt. James “Mickey” Sullivan 6th Wis. (J. McShane)
  • Arrival of the XI Corps and its deployment north of Town to face the new Confederate threat, And   The retreat of the I and XI Corps from the initial positions North & West of town to the hills south of town,  from the perspective of the new I Corps Commander. Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday. (F. Wood)
  • The arrival of Maj. Gen. W.S. Handcock on the field. (R. Faranec)

The Second Day:  Thursday July 2, 1863

  • The Advance of the Union III Corps commanded by Maj. Gen. Daniel Sickles, forward, from their assigned positions, without Generals Meads Approval, and the subsequent Battle that developed with General Longstreet’s advancing Confederate Corps. (J. Griffiths)
  • The simultaneous Battle on the Union’s right Flank at Culps Hill, under the overall command of Gen. N. Green. (B. Geiger)
  • The story of the 20th Conn. on Culps Hill – Lt. Col W.B. Wooster (J. Connery)
  • The pivotal defense of the far Left flank of Little Round Top, by the 20th Maine under Col. J Chamberlin. (D. Henja)
  • The blessing of the Irish Brigade by Fr. William Corby Captain USV (B. Vosseler)
  • Saving the III Corps from annihilation, and restoring the Union Lines at the end of the Second Day.  Maj. Gen. W.S. Handcock (R. Faranec)
  • Caring for the wounded on the Battlefield, “French” Mary Tepe Vivandiere, 114 PVI (C. McShane  

The Third Day:  Friday July 3, 1863

  • Re-cap of the Council of War held late the Second Day, Maj. Gen. G.G. Meade. (A. Waskie) and Brig. Gen J. Gibbon 2nd Div. II Corps (R. Hanrahan)
  • The Confederate artillery barrage, and the divided opinion about a Union response, Maj. Gen. W.S. Handcock, Brig. Gen. H. J. Hunt. (R. France, J. Mills)
  • The cavalry battle to the East of Gettysburg, Maj. Gen G.A. Custer (T. Jordan)
  • The Repulse of Pickets Charge by the Union Center, Brig. Gen J. Gibbon (R. Hanrahan), and Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday. (F. Wood)

Aftermath: Circa Tuesday July 7, 1863

  • Organization of the largest Field Hospital to date in the war, Dr. J. Letterman (Dr. R. Krakauer)
  • Condition of the Union Army after the battle Maj. Gen. G.G. Meade. (A. Waskie)
  • Recollections of the Dedication of the first National Military Cemetery, by Union General Officers who participated in the battle and were also present at the dedication.  Brig. Gen. John Gibbon(R. Hanrahan), and Maj. Gen. Abner Doubleday. (F. Wood). Fade to a Pre-Recorded Gettysburg Address delivered by President A. Lincoln (J. Getty)
