More than two million Americans abuse or are addicted to opioids, which often starts prescription pain relievers, and can lead to addiction and the use of heroin, which is often laced with synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. In 2017, more than 70,000 Americans died due to drug overdoses. Though statistics for 2018 are incomplete, preliminary numbers show a slowing in the volume of deaths compared to 2017, but the crisis is not over. To discuss opioid abuse and treatment are: Peter Luongo, Executive Director of the Institute for Research, Education and Training in Addictions (IRETA); and Damon McCaulley, a Treatment Specialist with Addiction Campuses.
