Tina Williams Brewer has been using story quilts as an expression of her art for the past 30 years. Brewer has worked toward guiding her work, and those in the community who have joined her, to the unexplored and new. She encourages others to break the rules on traditional quilting methods, as she was encouraged by her own previous instructor.
She is best known for her exploration of African-American history, and personal experiences associated with it. Her art uses symbolism, textile and fabrics to create stories focused on family, women and children, and the spirituality and values of the culture.
Her celebrations of African-American heritage have been displayed across 50 major venues throughout the United States, and worldwide. Recently, she received the 2018 Governor’s Awards for the Arts, Artist of the Year Award.
