In Pennsylvania, the abuse of older adults is a growing issue. According to the AP, caseworkers handled nearly 32,000 calls about potential older adult abuse in the 2017-18 fiscal year, which is up from the 18,500 from five years earlier. Many of these abusers are people that the older adult knows, and these forms of abuse include physical abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. In this episode we will discuss the growing problem of older adult abuse, legislation like the Older Adult Protective Services Act, organizations across the state that are fighting to protect Pennsylvania's older adults, and the ways older adults can protect themselves and report abuse.
Our guests will include: Ray Landis, Advocacy Manager for AARP of Pennsylvania; Vicki Hoak, CEO of the PA Homecare Association; and Diane Menio, the Executive Director of the Center for Advocacy for the Rights and Interests of the Elderly (CARIE).
