It's estimated that nearly 90,000 grandparents in Pennsylvania are raising their grandchildren because their parents are unfit or unable to raise the children themselves. Taking the children in to their care saves the commonwealth an estimated $1 billion yearly, but one fifth of the families affected operate on incomes below the poverty line. On this episode of Focus on Aging Adults, we'll discuss the growing epidemic of grandparents raising grandchildren, and what our legislators are doing to provide aid to families in this situation.
Our guests include: Stella Hyde, Caregiving Volunteer Leader for the AARP of Pennsylvania; State Representative Day Pashinski; and Matthew Kaplan, Professor of Intergenerational Programs and Aging at Penn State University.
