Exploring PA Boroughs: Camp Hill

The borough of Camp Hill is in Cumberland County, across the Susquehanna River from Pennsylvania’s capital city of Harrisburg.  The name "Camp Hill" is believed to stem from a split in a local church congregation. One faction of the church began meeting outdoors on a hill.  During the Civil War, in late June of 1863, the Battle of Sporting Hill took place in Camp Hill, and became the northernmost engagement of the Gettysburg campaign.

The borough is now home to approximately 7,600 residents, the Cleve J. Fredricksen Library, Holy Spirit Hospital, Siebert Park, a public pool, and the Camp Hill Shopping Center.  Downtown, several businesses including the Cornerstone Coffeehouse can be found on the borough’s main drag, Market Street.

Camp Hill’s school district is one of the smallest in Pennsylvania; it has no school buses.  The borough’s high school is in the middle of a community that allows students to walk, bike, or be driven to school.   Camp Hill’s location is convenient for visitors who want to explore nearby historic Hershey and Gettysburg, both less than an hour’s drive away.
