PCN Receives Grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to Spotlight Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Historic Legacy

Funding will support the production of programs that highlight the region’s pivotal role in America’s founding as part of the commemorations of America's 250th in PA.

CAMP HILL, PA – [3/12/2026] – PCN is pleased and grateful to announce the receipt of a grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to produce a series of original programming focused on Southwestern Pennsylvania’s historic and cultural contributions. The grant will allow PCN to produce interviews, event coverage, and documentary-style features centered on sites and stories that shaped both the Commonwealth and the nation.

Southwestern Pennsylvania played a defining role in America’s founding, yet many of its contributions remain under-recognized. The region’s legacy encompasses pivotal battles of the French and Indian War and Revolutionary era, as well as the waterways and industries that propelled America’s growth, making it essential to understanding the nation’s story. As the nation prepares to commemorate its 250th anniversary, PCN’s programming will ensure these stories are preserved and shared widely.

“PCN is honored to receive this generous contribution from the Richard King Mellon Foundation,” said Debra Kohr Sheppard, President and CEO of PCN. “This funding allows us to highlight the people, places, and events that made Southwestern Pennsylvania such an important part of our nation’s history. By capturing these stories, we are creating a lasting record that will inform and inspire generations.”

The Richard King Mellon Foundation, founded in 1947, has long invested in initiatives that advance the future and quality of life in Southwestern Pennsylvania while protecting America’s environmental heritage in all 50 states. Today, it stands as the largest foundation in the region and among the 50 largest worldwide.

PCN’s new programming will feature historians, curators, and community leaders, along with coverage of commemorative events and in-depth explorations of historic sites such as Fort Ligonier and Hanna’s Town. These productions will stream on PCNSelect.com, through the PCN Select app, and statewide on PCN’s cable channel.

“The upcoming 250th anniversary of America is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate Pennsylvania’s role in shaping our nation,” Sheppard added. “With the Richard King Mellon Foundation’s support, PCN will ensure that Southwestern Pennsylvania’s contributions are not only remembered locally but recognized statewide.”
