You are here: Home / Archive Exploring PA Boroughs / Exploring PA Boroughs: Pottstown

Pottstown is a borough nestled in the northwestern corner of Montgomery County. Home to 22,377 residents, Pottstown is found 40 miles from Philadelphia and 20 miles south of Reading, up on Route 422. Located on the Schuylkill river, the borough had originally been called Pottsgrove when it was laid out in the early 1750's. Upon incorporation as a borough in 1815, Pottsgrove became Pottstown. It holds the distinction of being Pennsylvania's second borough. The early regional economy was strongly tied to iron, and Pottstown's founder John Potts was an iron master by trade. Iron and steel production became the backbone of the economy, eventually producing steel used in the Golden Gate Bridge.

Today, on High Street, you'll find a growing downtown scene punctuated by new bars, restaurants, and stores. The Steel River Playhouse hosts plays and shows nine months a year, and the Colebrookdale Railroad offers a glimpse into the past. Pottstown is also home to the Hill School, a preparatory boarding school with a storied history.

Exploring PA Boroughs: Pottstown will air June 4th at 7:30pm.
