You are here: Home / Archive Exploring PA Boroughs / Exploring PA Boroughs: Lewistown – February 6th, 7:30 PM

Lewistown is a borough of 8,338 in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Situated 60 miles northwest of Harrisburg, along the Juniata River, Lewistown was incorporated in 1795. It was named for William "Bill" Lewis, a Quaker and a member of the legislature. Lewis was responsible for the designation of the borough as the county seat of Mifflin County. Located near the geographic center of the state, the area became a hub for traffic moving in every direction. When the Pennsylvania Canal was built, Lewistown boomed as it became a cargo and passenger thoroughfare.

The historic Embassy Theater anchors a growing small-business scene, and Lewistown offers a wonderful small-town aesthetic. The area is home to a unique regional holiday: Goose Day. Brought to the Juniata River Valley in the late 1700’s, Goose Day’s arrival is thanks to an early settler from England. Legend has it that if you eat goose on September 29, also known as Saint Michaelmas Day, you will never want for money all the year round. Lewistown hosts a full array of Goose Day festivities.

Exploring PA Boroughs: Lewistown airs February 6 at 7:30 PM on cable and the PCN Select Streaming Service.
