Journalists Roundtable visited the Scranton Times-Tribune this week. Seven mayoral candidates are on the Nov. 5 municipal general election ballot, including five independents, two of whom switched party affiliation from Democratic to Independent. They are running in a special election to become the next mayor of Scranton to fill the two years remaining on the term of former Scranton Mayor Bill Courtright, who pleaded guilty in January to corruption charges in a pay-to-play scheme that included bribery and extortion. Councilman Wayne Evans was appointed interim mayor until January 2020. Gov. Tom Wolf announced the closures of the State Correctional Institution at Retreat and the White Haven State Center for people with intellectual disabilities, citing cost savings. State law requires hearings to be held before the closure is finally approved. Also discussed were the political leanings in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area, economic development and population trends. To talk about these issues are: Borys Krawczeniuk, Staff Writer with the Scranton Times-Tribune; Patrick McKenna, Assistant Editor of the Scranton Times-Tribune; and Dave Janoski, Managing Editor of the Wilkes-Barre Citizens' Voice.
