Forty-two years and one day ago, the Pennsylvania Cable Network was organized and since that time the network has relied primarily on cable system revenue to fund the itself. But times have changed as more and more people have opted not to subscribe to cable. And the network has seen a decline in revenue. And with that PCN, for the first time ever, will now accept donations.

“PCN is now poised to begin its new fundraising effort focused on philanthropic support consisting of viewer and corporate donations, sponsorships, and grant/foundation funding,” Debra Kohr Sheppard, president and CEO of PCN said in a news release. “Through these avenues, PCN will continue to provide citizens with direct access to unfiltered coverage of state government, and deliver high quality content focusing on the state’s rich history, culture, and high school sports that make our communities unique.”

The network is also known for its extensive coverage of the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show.

The nonprofit television station that is based in Hampden Township and has bureaus in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia made the announcement last week.

PCN also notes that it has never received state or federal funding.

The network also announced that it has hired Brett Mayer of Douglassville, Berks County to lead the station’s new fundraising efforts as vice president of development for PCN. Mayer comes to network with more than 15 years of nonprofit operations and fundraising experience with multiple organizations around the state including YMCA of Reading and Berks County, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – Northeast PA Chapter; the American Red Cross Eastern Pennsylvania Region and at Penn State Health St. Joseph.
