Organizing your Campaign Committee

"Basically, you juggle all the different balls in the air. That includes managing staff, helping the candidate get votes and get money. We try to keep the candidate as happy and as comfortable as possible so they can do the job they need to do."
Gloria Forouzan
Deputy Campaign Manager, William Peduto
Pittsburgh Mayoral Race, 2005 and 2007

Don't run your own campaign: it is important to have a team of strong allies behind you as you continue your journey of running for public office. Select a campaign manager and treasurer who will be responsible and trustworthy.

As the candidate, you should be focused on meeting people, talking to the press and getting voters to know who you are and what you stand for.

  • Campaign Manager
  • Treasurer
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Telephone Supervisor
  • Scheduler
  • Press Secretary

Reports

  • Campaign Finance Reports must be filed by candidates for public office disclosing information regarding contributions received and expenditures made for the purpose of the campaign. Each candidate and each political committee must file reports of receipts and expenditures, if the amount received or expended or liabilities incurred exceeds $250.
  • Contributions

  • Defined as any funds provided to the candidate for the promotion of their campaign.
  • Of note: it is unlawful to accept any money from an anonymous source. Cash over $100 from an individual person is strictly prohibited.

  • There are many important filing dates and deadlines. Make sure you get everything filed in time!

The amount of money spent on campaigns can range from the hundreds to six or seven figures. If you don't have a lot of money to spend, knock on doors, arrange a visit to your local diner or VFW, use email and the internet. It is very important to meet your potential voters in person. You can also advertise using television and your local radio station.
