March 20: PA Politics

The PA House is expected to vote on liquor privatization this week.  Terry Madonna, Director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin & Marshall College, appears to talk about the political impact of this bill’s success or failure, the recent charges against PA Turnpike officials, state pensions, and the 2014 Governor’s race.

Stand Strong against the Unions! There is absolutly no reason that the state should be in the business of selling liquor. The Governors support will Soar if he is seen as standing tall against the silly system. I’m aware that the Unions are ringing the phones off the hook (as on your show) but the people of Pennsylvania want to see the Gop House/Senate/Governor do SOMETHING. This would be a great start. This is your Scott Walker Moment!!

What about the 3500 jobs? Are you willing to look these people in the eye and tell them tough luck? The liquor stores pay their own way without state taxes and they add 500 million a year to the state coffers. Where will that money come from? The governor points out that it will be replaced by private liqour stores, but that can only happen by raising the prices on wines and liquor sky high like they just did in Washington state. These stores are an asset, not a burden. Keep the stores.

I agree with Dr. J. Now look at the proposed changes. There will be one place to buy your beer, another to buy your wine and another to buy your liquor. There will be a “special” license issued to sell booze on Sundays. What are we gaining? Nothing. We get a one-time infusion of cash and then what? Who gets the axe next? Keep this revenue stream coming into the State Revenue System. Beyond that, no one is talking about how these 3,500-5,000 low-level employees will get another job. The LCB will still be in place in Harrisburg after the sell off (they are the ones we want out for their scandals) but the little guy is the one who takes the hit. Clean up the top of the heap and the LCB would be a better organization.

Now we will have minimum wage girls in bikinis selling gin to the lowest common denominator.
