March 6: Natural Gas Drilling Health Study With David Carey

The first large-scale endeavor to determine the effects of natural gas drilling on human health is under way.   David Carey, lead investigator for Geisinger Health System’s Marcellus Shale Research Initiative, will examine hundreds of thousands of electronic patient records in an effort to produce what he calls “hard, rigorous,  scientific data.”

    I am interested in how this process will occur and how conclusions will be made. Will geisinger have access to information from outside their system? And what about those without health insurance, those that self medicate and cannot afford to be diagnosed?
