PCN profiles Charlie LaVallee, CEO of Variety, the Children’s Charity.
Based in Pittsburgh, Variety’s mission is to help children with disabilities live life to the fullest by providing them with mobility and communication equipment, as well as with special programs.
Charlie launched Variety’s “My Bike Program” in November of 2012. With the support of Governor Tom Corbett and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, the program has granted adaptive bikes to over 250 children with disabilities.
Prior to becoming CEO of Variety, Charlie directed and developed Highmark’s Caring Program for Children–the first private sector program to provide health coverage to children of the working uninsured. The Caring Program served as the model for the Pennsylvania Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and was replicated in 24 other states through a federal grant.
